Decoding Your Boy:
Less yelling, more connecting
This is the real deal–2 LIVE, 75-minute sessions each month–with Boy-Parenting Expert Janet Allison, where you get into the nitty-gritty of what's going on with your son... so you can finally forge the deeper relationship with him that you have long desired.
Say goodbye to nagging and lofty parenting theories and say hello to real talks, real strategies, and a real relationship with your son that you can be proud of.
““I have greatly appreciated your wisdom over the years. While our son was young, you helped us have patience and understanding and nurture his beautiful “boyness,” and for that I am so very grateful.”
MONTHLY THEMES
We know you have questions about your boy ALL YEAR LONG. Regardless of whether your question is directly related to each month’s theme… you’ll be sure to get answers to your own current questions PLUS you’ll benefit from hearing thoughts and insights on boys in general.
January - HOW TO GET HIM TO LISTEN - the first time!
“He doesn’t listen…or talk to me.” Countless parents have said: “Why do I have to say everything 1,000 times?” There are ways to talk with him so that he WILL listen…and ways to talk to him so that he will talk with you! A great starting point for understanding the very different way that boys communicate.
February - SCHOOL & HOMEWORK
“Why can’t he just do his homework…and then turn it in?!” School and homework count among the biggest frustrations for many parents — and for many boys, too. Even if he does his homework…why in the world won’t he turn it in? OR why does he complain and grouse about it (which takes even longer than if he would just do it!) We’ll talk about the steps you can take to help him cope with school and …get his homework finished AND turn it in.
March - BOYS & ANGER
“His emotions are big …and scary!” “The default emotion for boys, by the age of 9, is anger,” so says Michael Gurian, a fellow parenting expert. Whether he is 3 or 13, anger is a scary emotion. How do you keep him safe, how do you cope with these big emotions, and when is it all going to settle down?
April - SCREEN TIME & VIDEO GAMES
“I’m afraid he’s missing out on life.” How do you manage the constant pulls on his time along with his seemingly unending desire to be on a screen? How do you keep your family connected when he’s in his room…on his device? Understanding the pull of screens and then how to manage this “thing” that isn’t going away in a way that keeps all of you sane.
May - KEYS to BOY-FRIENDLY COMMUNICATING
You may feel like you live in a different world from him…that’s only because you communicate the way YOU do naturally. When you know HIS preferred styles, you’ve got the keys to understanding him - and communicating in a way that he will want to stay connected and engaged with you.
June - THE IMPORTANCE OF DAD & OTHER MEN (even if you’re a solo mom)
It really does take a village. But how do you get that when you’re a solo mom or when there is an absent father figure for your son to connect with. Even if you’re married to a man, you might feel like you’re having to carry the emotional load of the home. Find out how you can support and involve men and important role models in your boy’s world.
July - SIBLINGS & FRIENDSHIPS
Siblings are the friends you can’t live without. They teach everything about negotiating, fighting, and making amends. Meanwhile, their constant “he breathed on me” is driving you crazy. Here’s what to look for in sibling relationships and here’s how boys relate to other boys in friendship.
August - WHEN HARD THINGS HAPPEN
Sooner or later your boy will be faced with hard things - divorce, illness, death. How do you help him navigate disappointment, grief, and loss? His grief will not likely look like typical grief. How will you know when he’s ‘doing it right.”?
September - MANAGING PHONES & SCREEN TIME
So much time on devices…how do you keep your son safe on-line? What parental controls do you need to have in place? When is he ready for a phone? How do you manage screen and phone use - while still having a life (taking it away can feel exhausting!) How do you help this “digital native” navigate a world that may still feel a little bit strange to us? Here’s help and guidance.
October - FOSTERING HIS INDEPENDENCE (at any age)
We want our kids to be able to live on their own as young adults but where do we start letting them be more independent? How do we build him towards that, helping him see how capable he is each and every day? What do you do when he rebels and doesn’t want to do “the thing”?
November - HOW NOT TO RAISE AN ENTITLED “BRAT”
Kids are easily persuaded that they need the latest gadget or the newest upgrade in their Fortnite app. How do you raise them to be of service to others, care for the greater good, and most of all not be that spoiled brat you all try to avoid on the playground.
December - HOLIDAY CHAOS
Your son’s less-than-stellar qualities are likely amplified over the holidays… How can you do holidays differently? As with most things parenting, it begins and ends with you. What’s your attitude going into the holidays - stressed and overwhelmed? Or calm and taking things as they come?
